This Year’s URTeC On Course To Share Exciting Innovations That Improve Well Economics
By Jeremy Viscomi
The Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC) 2025 is a must-attend event for anyone in the upstream oil and gas sector. Set to be held June 9-11 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, URTeC promises to deliver technical insights, cutting-edge technologies and valuable networking opportunities.
With more than 350 technical presentations, the conference will cover a broad range of topics related to unconventional resource development, from reservoir engineering and drilling technology to data analytics and well optimization strategies. The event will showcase real-world case studies and provide practical insights into challenges and opportunities in the unconventional oil and gas sector.
One session that stands out is “GenAI and ML for Unconventionals.” This session will explore how AI and ML are being applied in unconventional resources to improve operational efficiency and decision-making processes. Speakers will present case studies that demonstrate the practical ways to apply these technologies, which are helping operators optimize drilling plans, predict reservoir behavior, and enhance well performance.
Another session of note is “Unlocking Tight Oil Reservoirs: A Case Study in the Powder River Basin.” This session will dive into a case study from the Powder River Basin, one of the most active tight oil regions in the United States. In the process, it will profile innovative strategies for assessing reservoir properties, such as enhanced seismic imaging and wellbore logging technologies. Additionally, the session will describe new stimulation techniques and production optimization methods that are helping operators achieve better recovery rates in challenging formations.
“Maximizing Completion Efficiency in Unconventional Reservoirs” will explore the latest completion technologies, including new techniques for frac design, wellbore stimulation and reservoir stimulation. Speakers will discuss how operators can use real-time data analytics and advanced modeling tools to optimize completion designs and ensure that they get the best possible results from each well. With a focus on improving efficiency and reducing costs, this session is highly relevant for operators looking to maximize unconventional wells’ productivity while keeping expenses in check.
For operators working in the Permian Basin or other prolific unconventional regions, the “Production Optimization in the Permian Basin: Data-Driven Approaches” session is a must-see. Speakers will share case studies on how operators use advanced data analytics, real-time monitoring and machine learning to monitor well performance, predict production declines, and make real-time adjustments. The session will also cover how operators integrate production data with reservoir models to guide production strategies and improve overall economics.
In addition to these technical sessions, URTeC 2025 will feature several other presentations that will interest independent operators. For example, “Advancements in Horizontal Drilling and Multilateral Wells” will examine powerful new drilling technologies, touching on improvements to bit design, drilling fluids and directional drilling. It will also discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with multilateral wells.
Another interesting session is “Innovations in Water Management for Unconventional Operations.” Water management is a critical issue for many upstream oil and gas operators, particularly in regions where water availability is limited. This session will detail the latest steps forward for water recycling, treatment and disposal, as well as strategies for minimizing water usage during hydraulic fracturing operations.
For companies looking to boost production and extend the life of their assets, “Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in Unconventional Reservoirs” is worth attending. This session will focus on new techniques in EOR that are being applied in unconventional reservoirs, including advances in carbon dioxide injection and water flooding.
In addition to the technical sessions, URTeC 2025 will feature a robust exhibition for operators looking to discover new solutions to improve their operations. The exhibition will be an excellent opportunity to connect with technology providers and learn more about the latest industry innovations, from geophysics and reservoir modeling to enhanced oil recovery.
Attending URTeC 2025 is an excellent way to stay on top of emerging trends and technologies in the unconventional resources sector. With its comprehensive technical sessions, hands-on technology showcase, and ample networking opportunities, the premier event will provide the knowledge and resources needed to stay ahead of the curve.
